Muscle strain

A muscle strain occurs when a muscle is stretched beyond its limit, causing the muscle fibers to be damaged and partially torn. Most mild muscle strains can improve with rest and proper recovery. Patients often feel shoulder pain when lifting the arm overhead, rotating the shoulder, reaching behind the back, or lying on the painful side. If prolonged, this condition can reduce shoulder range of motion, cause muscle weakness, and affect both training and daily activities.

Shin pain

Shin pain usually appears on the front or inner side of the lower leg, especially in runners, beginners, or those who increase running intensity too quickly. The cause is often related to repetitive stress on the shinbone and surrounding soft tissues. Pain may worsen when running, jumping, or exercising on hard surfaces.

Runner's Knee

Runner's Knee causes pain around or behind the kneecap, especially when running, climbing stairs, squatting, or jumping. Elbow tendinitis

How to treat sports injuries at home

For mild to moderate acute sports injuries such as minor sprains, muscle strains, contusions, or pain after impact, first aid in the first 48–72 hours is very important. If handled properly, the patient can reduce swelling and pain and recover better.

One common first-aid principle that can be applied at home is the P.R.I.C.E protocol, which includes 5 steps: 

  • R (Rest – Rest): During the first 48 hours, the patient should limit strenuous activity and prioritize rest. Proper rest helps the body focus its energy on healing while reducing the risk of soft tissue damage spreading.

  • I (Ice – Apply cold): Cold compresses help constrict blood vessels, reduce swelling, and support pain relief in the early stage after injury. The patient should apply ice for about 15–20 minutes each time, repeating every 2–3 hours if swelling or pain persists. Note: do not place ice directly on the skin. Wrap the ice in a thin towel, a damp cloth, or use a specialized ice pack to avoid frostbite or skin irritation.

  • C (Compression – Apply pressure to the injured area): Compression helps limit swelling by reducing the space for inflammatory fluid and bruising to spread through the tissue. The patient can use an elastic bandage wrapped around the injured area with moderate pressure, not too tight to avoid restricting blood circulation.

  • E (Elevation – Raise the injured area): Raise the injured area above heart level. This position helps blood and bruising fluid return to the heart more easily, thereby helping reduce swelling, tightness, and the aching sensation caused by pressure in the injured area.
